JLA response to claims of excessive rent increases post Covid-19 freeze
10 August 2020
“Extremely disappointed to have reports of a group of elderly residents facing a 16% rent increase in October because of a new landlord taking ownership of their homes. The end of the legal rent freeze is going to put people through hardship. It should be extended.” Housing Minister stated this via Twitter on 30th July and the story was picked up by the JEP on Friday 7th August.
The landlord subsequently explained its position via the media.
Being faced yet again with these emotive headlines, the JLA committee have commented on this story and our comments have been shared with Island media outlets and can be accessed by the link below;
The Committee do not feel that sensationalist headline figures should be the basis for any permanent change to legislation that would affect both landlords and tenants alike.
